The 2026 Refurbishment
Portomaso marked a new chapter in January 2026 with the Portomaso Grand Opening, a poker festival with a 5 million EUR guarantee held from 16 to 26 January 2026. The festival launched the casino’s renovated property and its new poker room, which brought upgraded tables and lighting, a refreshed floor design, better player facilities and a dedicated TV feature table for broadcasting final tables.
Poker at Portomaso
Poker is at the heart of what Portomaso does. The casino runs daily tournaments and cash games and regularly hosts international festivals, which makes it one of the busiest poker venues in Malta. If you are planning a visit around a series, check the festival calendar in advance, as popular events fill up quickly.
Table Games and Slots
Away from the poker room, the gaming floor offers a solid mix of slot machines and live tables. The classic table line up includes:
- Blackjack, with several table limits.
- Roulette.
- Ultimate Texas Hold’em, played against the house.
- Punto banco, the casino version of baccarat.
Getting There
Portomaso is in the heart of St Julian’s, a short walk from Paceville and many of the area’s hotels. The Hilton Malta is next door, and the marina and Portomaso tower make the complex easy to spot.
Getting There and Parking
The casino is inside the Portomaso complex, between the Hilton Malta and the Portomaso marina. It is easy to find thanks to the Portomaso tower, one of the tallest buildings on the island.
Unlike the other St Julian’s casinos, Portomaso has a car park right in the complex, which makes it the easiest choice if you are driving. Buses and ride hailing apps also stop close to the Hilton.
A Poker Night at Portomaso
Poker runs every evening, with most games starting around 19:00 or 20:00. The room is known for cash games every day, weekly deep stack tournaments and bounty events, plus the big international festivals that take over the venue a few times a year.
The rake is capped, and during big festivals the regular weekly tournaments are usually put on hold. Check the schedule before you travel if you are coming for a specific event.
Is Portomaso Casino Right for You?
- Best for poker players of every level.
- The easiest St Julian’s casino if you are driving.
- Close to the marina restaurants and the Hilton.
- A smaller table game floor than Casino Malta or Dragonara.
If poker is your game, start here. For slots and a wider mix of tables, Casino Malta is a better fit.
Around Portomaso Casino
The Portomaso marina is lined with restaurants and bars, so it is easy to combine dinner and poker in one evening. Spinola Bay, with its colourful fishing boats and waterfront cafes, is a short walk along the coast.
The Hilton Malta is next door, and Paceville with its nightlife is about ten minutes away on foot. Because the complex has its own car park, Portomaso is also the most practical choice for visitors driving in from other parts of the island.
For a bigger night out, you can walk on to Casino Malta and Dragonara afterwards. The three St Julian’s casinos are close enough to visit in a single evening.
Prefer to Play From Home?
Portomaso is a great night out, but it is not the only way to play. MGA licensed online casinos offer thousands of slots and live dealer tables, with welcome packages that no land-based casino can match.
